Where the iris grows, nature flourishes
For the Cooperativa Toscana Giaggiolo, protecting biodiversity is an integral part of its mission. The farming of the iris, on the hills of Florence and Upper Valdarno, contributes to the protection of natural habitats and to the enhancement of the traditional agricultural landscape.
Preserving the natural habitat
Our fields are located in hilly areas, amidst olive groves and vineyards, and are farmed using the agroforestry method. The use of ancient terraces, which have been recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, guarantees slope stability, erosion control and the creation of microhabitats that benefit and encourage biodiversity.

Native species and traditional methods
We grow two species that are native to the Mediterranean basin – Iris Pallida and Iris Florentina – using traditional farming techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation. Manual farming methods that have a low environmental impact allow us to grow a very high-quality product while still respecting local biodiversity.
Sustainable farming systems
Our agricultural model excludes the use of pesticides, allows the use of only a limited amount of exclusively organic fertiliser and relies solely on rainwater. The typical elements that make up the landscape – dry walls, wild herbs, natural watercourses – are well maintained and highly valued, and have become true reservoirs of biodiversity.
Programmes and specific projects
Cooperativa Toscana Giaggiolo promotes concrete, tangible projects to integrate iris cultivation with environmental protection. The ‘Sovescio’ and ‘Farfalle’ initiatives are two important examples of our commitment to sustainability: the first is dedicated to soil regeneration and soil fertility, the second to the conservation and monitoring of the Lepidoptera populations in the fields.
These are two complementary systems that strengthen our model of regenerative and sustainable farming.

Each of our fields tells the story of our respect for the land and for the people: our Union for Ethical BioTrade certificate is proof of it.
